SERVING THE WOODWORKING INDUSTRY FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS: THE ORIGINS OF ITS SUCCESS

’50s-’60s - THE ORIGINS: THE WORLD IS OUR MARKET

SCMwas founded in 1952by Lanfranco Aureli and Nicola Gemmani, both experienced workers in the agricultural machinery and iron foundry industries.

The first successful machine produced by SCM was named “L’invincibile”, designed by the young engineer Giuseppe Gemmani. A combined, multipurpose machine for joineriesthat conquered the market rapidly. From the very beginning the company decided to produce in series, a strategy that cut costs and offered high quality products at a competitive price. Hence the company was in the position to challenge the well established producers from Germany, England and France, and also create in a short space of time a capillary network of dealers and agents, first in Italy, then in Europe and finally in the main world markets. SCM, since its origins, has acted with an international vision and the founders clearly wanted their market to be a global one.

’70s – SCM PATENTED THE FIRST CNC ROUTER

SCM developed its business network and increased its product range. In 1974 it is the first company to design a numerically control router. In the Seventies, SCM was manufacturing high production automatic machines thus broadening its target to the medium and large industries. The first subsidiaries were opened in France, Usa, the UK and Germanyas other joint-ventures were signed up so as to provide immediate and efficient service the world over.

’80s – THE FIRST ACQUISITIONS

In the early Eighties, SCM expanded with the acquisition of a number of prestigious companies: Morbidelli, Gabbiani, Mahros, DMC, Stefani and IDM, developing its offer of automatic machines and integrated systems for the large furniture industryand offering a comprehensive range of machines covering all working needs: from the small to the large industry, for solid wood and panel, from CNC machinery to highly flexible integrated systems. Moreover in the eighties the Group was particularly dedicated to the development and innovation of its products and created its own advanced research centre, the CSR, equipped with vanguard laboratories for studies on acoustics, vibrations, dust and fluid dynamics.

’90s – RESEARCH AND TRAINING

In the Nineties, SCM Group improved its worldwide presence by increasing the number of subsidiaries on the main strategic markets. The Group’s leadership in the iron casting and components sectors was also consolidated. Research and training was further developed by signing on partnerships with some of the most prestigious international universities and by creating and operating a technical school for woodworking. In 1995 SCM achieved the world leadership for window production machinery; furthermore, all the companies were registered under one business name: SCM Group SpA.

2000 to date – ENTRANCE IN THE MARBLE, METAL, STONE, PLASTIC AND GLASS INDUSTRIES

In the recent years, SCM Group has maintained its leading role by acquiring other renowned brands: in 2002, the CMS Group, specialised in plastic, glass and marble processing, and Tecnocut, specialised in water-jet cutting systems for the production of marble, stone, plastic and metal components. Through CMS, the Group specialized and increased its expertise in other sectors and in advanced technologies, benefiting also from the related production and engineering synergies. In 2004 Elmag, known with the Superfici and Valtorta brands, leader in finishing technology for wood, plastic, glass and paper, joined the Group contributing with a vast know-how in the painting sector. Two years later, first Sergiani, leader in the production of presses and pressing systems, then Casadei Macchinewith its tradition in the production of artisan machinery and finally the Delmac Group(with the Busellato, Celaschi, SAG and CPC brands) offering a longstanding experience and completing the Group’s exceptionally comprehensive range of machinery for solid wood and panel processing.
